Boycott Black Friday: #OptOutside sweeps the country
Instead of flooding the malls this Friday, people are rushing into the great outdoors following REI’s example in the #OptOutside movement.
“We announced that we are closing our doors on Black Friday, paying our employees — all of them — to spend the day with the people who matter most and making it easier to #OptOutside,” REI CEO and President Jerry Stritzke wrote. “We hoped to spark a conversation about the healing, inspiring power of getting outside. What better time than the Thanksgiving holiday?”
The idea to boycott Black Friday shopping took off – with millions of people excited to get out to the great outdoors and dozens of establishments and parks getting on board to make it easier than ever to explore.
“It’s a privilege and an honor to be part of an organization that is about something more than the bottom line,” Stritzke wrote. “The idea of choosing to #OptOutside on Black Friday might seem radical to those who do not know the heart of the co-op, but I believe it is an ideal way to make a statement about our values.”
What are you doing this Friday? Below are a list of national parks with special offers this Friday. Take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate with friends and family, and go explore.
Consumerism ends with us – the generation willing and ready to #OptOutside, proving thankfulness lasts longer than one day a year.
